Some people laugh at this woman. I think that's the wrong response.

I am very concerned when people are this blind to faith and it's 'ability' to fix all. Wouldn't God just fix things for her, being a Christian and all, anyway? Won't the power of prayer help her family, regardless of who's in office?

The bottom line is she's just a racist. Forget about her faith, forget about her devotion. You know, initially you'd think that her, and others like her, were harmless. But you'd be wrong. That they don't understand the separation of church and state is a fundamental right, and becoming more and more a problem.

Scenarios should be explained to these people. Imagine if senators and representatives were more faith based than anything else. It's too far reaching to really get into, but then just imagine all of the different sects of religion. Who would be right? Who would be prosecuted because of their beliefs? I'm not sure it would be possible for there to be more than one faith under this kind of rule. And we've all heard about how religion has made for some of the deadliest times in human history.

Is God really going to help America, only? And is he going to punish us if Obama gets elected?

This reminds me of those lunatics that said that the California lightning strikes that caused all of the fires were due to the fact of California lifting the ban on gay marriage. You can tie all of these types of people in with those who murder doctors who perform abortions. Bombers who strike clinics. Racists who tie black men with chains up to trucks and drag them for miles. All things that have happened in the last decade.

Just imagine what's going to happen to this country when the first crisis unfolds under an Obama presidency, and who these people are going to blame.

The ramifications of an Obama presidency, in the eyes of these types of individuals, brings to my mind some very nasty scenarios. I think that flipping from faith based to radical won't be too difficult, for some people, come November 5th, and I worry about this a great deal. All it takes is one idiot, who will set in motion events that will get many people killed.

I hope it doesn't come to that. I was going to say 'pray', but I don't think that's going to help.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann

Michele Bachmann is one of those people who most Americans fear is in a position of power. She's completely out of touch with most Americans who don't use religion as a crutch, and is perfectly at home in her state of Minnesota.

Here, she goes on to say that Obama is anti-American. This is how far we've come. Forget the racism that's obviously rampant in this country, forget all the smear campaigns. Now we have a Congresswoman going so far as to accuse one of her peers of being anti-American.

Make sure you watch both videos.

I've mentioned Bachmann before on this site. I think, for me, the creepiest part about her is she doesn't blink. And when she does blink, I think that's her brain pressing the rewind button so she can repeat what's been programmed into her.

Hi all.

Back from a little hiatus. So much to talk about. I won't get into the debates, or into the SNL Palin/Fey thingies. You've probably heard about it all and talked about it all ad nauseum.

So, let's see what I have for you today.

Oh, hey, let's talk about Joe the Plumber. Is this guy a douche, or what? It is impossible to get away from the internet, when you get thrust into the spotlight as this guy has. First, he was complaining about purchasing a busin... wait, watch the clip.

So, from this clip you'd have to believe that he's either close to making $250,000 a year... or he is.

Well, he's not. And now, word is, he's not even a licensed plumber.

If you saw last night's debate, you'll remember the two dozen or so 'Joe the Plumber' references. Well, the news is, now, that this guy's just a moron, and anything of substance that he tried to say has gone down the toilet.

DOWN THE TOILET!

Ahhh... that was funny.

It's very difficult to look at this situation, and this man, in a different light than the one I'm living under at the moment. At the most, in my life, I've made, in one year's salary, about one quarter of $250,000. That's the most I've ever made, in one year. And I have a marketable skill which should, in a better economy, be making me at least $90k. I've been looking for work now, steady, full time graphic design work, for over 1 year. I have sent out over 300 resumes in that time. Way over, in fact. I have three different head hunters working for me. And the fact is that there just isn't enough around.

The other fact is, there are more graphic designers and web designers in NYC than there are lawyers. I recently got an email from a company that has taken almost one month to go through the resumes they received for a part-time designer position. And I'm one of 12 people who fit the bill. We'll see how that goes.

But my problem with Joe is that, when the video first came out, he was concerned with paying an additional 3% in taxes on what would amount to $20,000 dollars. I say $20k because he initially said his business would be making about $270k or so.

So, from 36% to 39%, he's concerned about paying about $600 additional on that $20,000.

Well. First off, the majority of the people in this country don't even take home $600 a week! Secondly, he wouldn't get taxed any different for the $250k. Third... he's living in OHIO! He's not living in NYC, or LA, or some other city where the cost of living is so high that it would affect him thus... and I have news for you, I'm in NYC, and that $600 would not affect me one single bit. If I was making $250k a year, I would consider myself rich. Not to mention my girlfriend could lose her job and we'd still be ok, AND I could help my mom and sister out with the family business.

See, all of this is pre-information on Joe. Now we find out he's not making even remotely that much money, he was just bragging and talking out of his ass. Then we find out he's not even a licensed plumber. And then we find that the plumbers union is pissed at him... I mean, jesus christ. Can anyone make this stuff up? It's a joke!

Forget this guy. He's a blip, and it backfired severely, except for middle America, where they obviously don't know or care about the internet. Like these people that Al-Jazeera interviewed:

Ok, so, last post I said I was going to go a bit more in depth on Palin. I am vacationing in Napa right now, so I won't be around to really go in depth on her, but here's something.

Here's an article on the whole 'troopergate' scandal (jesus, I hate those 'gate' words). It details about the lawsuit pending, the pressure on firings, who is culpable, what the trooper did, and so on and so forth.

First off, I'd like to say that someone mentioned the possibility of the Palin 'scandal' of her trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired was a bunch of bullshit. It's by someone I respect, so I'm going to spend some time next post trying to get to the bottom of it, and some more Palin stuff.

That is, unless she's not given the ticket at the RNC.

First, some news about that.

Seems her speech for Tuesday night was cancelled, without any explanation.

Not a good sign.

Also, a quick article on Palin's almost being recalled as a Mayor, for firing city employees who were not fully backing her efforts to govern.

Moving on.

Fucked up shit at the RNC, including a number of reporters being treated very poorly, with violence, pepper spray, and aggravated arrests.

The St. Paul police were given $50 million dollars for added security for the RNC. Seems they decided to go the old 'no tolerance' route this year, and basically said 'screw everyone who gets even remotely out of line, or looks at your weird.'

More than 280 people were arrest, and some were charged with felonies, including being charged with 'conspiracy to riot.'

And, of course, no post would be complete without some awesome videos.

First off, if you haven't already heard, he has chosen the Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, as his running mate.

Sarah Palin, who has been in office, in total, one year, as a politician in a almost any capacity.

Sarah Palin, who is governor of a state that is younger than her running mate.

Sarah Palin, who allegedly, after getting into office, tried to get a state police trooper in good standing fired because he was his sister's ex-husband.

Sarah Palin, who has absolutely no experience and, by being chosen, in one fell swoop, completely destroyed the McCain camps ability to stand on the one platform they had.

Obama's 'inexperience' to become President of the United States.

What the fuck.

an open letter to the Denver Mayor and City Council

And anyone else who'd like to read it. I mailed this off to them this evening, after reading about an incident at the DNC.

Mr. Mayor, and the Denver City Council,

I wanted to write to express my disappointment in the city of this year's Democratic National Convention.

Being a realist, I understand that, wherever there are protests, there will always be police involvement. Officers who do their jobs. Officers who are concerned about the safety and well being of the people they are sworn to protect.

And officers who are only interested in maintaining their definition of order.

As a realist, I also know there are officers who enjoy inflicting pain, as well. Officers who feel superior to ordinary citizens. And officers who believe that their badge gives them a wide threshold for violent behavior that will not result in a loss of their job.

It's individuals like this who get the '10-paid day' vacations of suspension, as a way of appeasing the local government that some action has been taken. It's a band-aid, unfortunately, and in this day and age, those bad apples have no place in what is quickly becoming a police state, rather than a free country.

I've decided to give you a record of numerous instances of some of your officers doing more than protecting and serving. I think it's important that someone share these with you (if they haven't done so already), and demand that more than the norm is done to make sure these officers don't think they can get away with violent behavior against protestors.

It would be easy for me to sight police brutality cases outside of protesting situations, but let's stick to the topic at hand.

Here is an article that details officers surrounding groups of protestors and shooting them with pepper spray, hitting them with batons and also with paint-ball like weapons.

Here's an article on Alicia Forrest, along with the youtube clip, on her getting pushed to the ground by a police officer, and then subsequently arrested for 'interfering with an arrest' which basically means, she pissed off an officer.

Here's an article and video about an ABC news investigator/producer that was, in the end, choked, cuffed, arrested and physically threatened by one of your city's police officers.

Here's a fantastic article about the ACLU that details how Denver's police have violated people's rights in their arresting procedures.

And this is just the surface. I'm sure if you went to youtube, you'd find dozens upon dozens of videos of commentaries and on-the-scene footage of Denver's police doing some pretty terrible things.

Of course, they also don't show the police officers who are just doing their job. That's not news worthy.

As I said, I am a realist, and I know it's not them all. But those officers who went out of their way to cause pain, to arrest people, trumping up charges so that it was 'legal', those officers who weren't concerned with people's safety, as much as they were concerned with having a good story to tell about how they busted some heads... You have got to do something about them.

I do not live in Denver. I was unable to afford the trip to the DNC this year, unfortunately. But had I been there, it's quite possible that I could have been one of those people who were hurt, arrested, or both. And that thought frightens me, because the idea of protesting, especially in this country, is, the majority of the time, a peaceful process, filled with passion and vehemence for corporations and politicians who are not the police.

I'm sorry this had to happen. I'm a Democrat, and I was happy to see the convention in Denver. But everything I've seen and read makes me think that the Denver Police Department decided to either not brief its officers on making sure that safety was the main concern, or these officers didn't care to listen to their superiors.

In this day and age, when every single protestor has a device that can record video, for these officers to just forgo rules of conduct outside on the streets of Denver and act only for themselves, well, that's more than a shame.

That's criminal.

Few things today...

A 'plot' to kill Obama was foiled. The Secret Service said that the threat wasn't creditable.

I found this quite interesting. The man in question was stopped by police after driving erratically. He had some meth on him and a high powered rifle.

From what I gathered, the only place they could have shot the man was from on top of a McDonalds roof, and only during the hours of 11:00am and 11:30am, just after they stop serving breakfast (they're very strict at that McDonalds) and just before the big lunch rush.

First we have a terrible interviewer calling Pelosi out on her double standard of minimum wage, and her use of non-payed interns.

In my opinion, interns have been around since god knows how long. People understand what they're going to receive as an intern. Either experience for a future job, or school credit.

I doubt there is a political office in this country, let alone at any large corporation or practice, without an intern of some kind. I'm sure most are paid lower than their counterparts with experience. But the majority are volunteers or inexperienced workers who are looking for a future wedge.

Moving, have all these windows open on articles, so I'll do this quick.

First is Ann Coulter sticking her foot in her mouth, chewing off her foot, spitting the toes on the floor, looking at them, shrugging, then eating them cause she's got nothing better to do than attack... Canada?

When I say 'living under a rock', this is assuming you get your news from online, and not the mainstream media, who not only didn't report on this, but also did not report on the 100,000 signatures that Congressman Kucinich gave to Pelosi.

Three more things.

One. David Duke, ex-Louisiana House of Representatives member and former leader of the KKK, believes that if Obama is elected, there will be a surge of membership for white supremacist groups.

This opinion is quite shocking, really*.

Two. Ohio is suing Diebold for losing votes in 11 of the 44 counties.

And finally, author Orson Scott Card, who wrote, most notably Ender's Game, has stated that equality for gays is the end of democracy in America.

I was reading this article at After Downing Street on an Anti-War website, and how the administrator has been threatened numerous times by armed individuals who do or do not work for the government.

I hope that Tom Feeley doesn't give in to these people.

No one in this administration (if they are responsible) can convince any educated person that what they're doing is for the best interest of the country.

When you do something like that, when you put yourself out there and are anti-Government, I really think you have to take into consideration (at least with this Administration) that not only is there going to be trouble, but that you can't back down, at all.

I feel terrible for Mr. Freeley's wife and child, and grandchildren. It's an awful situation he's in. And it's a lot to ask, to not have him give up. But it's what these kinds of people want. To scare and intimidate people. To whitewash this whole situation the US is in.

Problem with Maryland SWAT team

I read an article on this many weeks ago, but I was perusing CNN (don't ask) and saw it, so I figured I'd link to it.

I'm not sure how many of you (christ, I think I'm only speaking Crotchety these days) are movie fans, but if you ever watch any cop dramas, you'll be able to recall plenty of plot lines where agencies did not share information with local police, and ended up doing something stupid/bad/wrong/deadly.

I don't have enough fingers (I have twelve*) to count how many movies have this plot line. There are that many.

More than twelve.

So I find it ridiculous when I see these kinds of stories, and how even now, today, police agencies are still this stubborn.

A simple phone call would have cleared up this entire situation. But the Prince Charles police department decided the bust was more important than courtesy.

These officers who go in after the door comes off its hinges are more interested in shooting then they are in justice. At least, that's the way it seems.

You'd have to have that kind of mentality to take that kind of job, I would suspect.

I hope that the Mayor will be able to take this as far as it will suit him to get over this situation. I think the last sentence ties up the entire article very succinctly.

I don't even know where to begin.

Ok, let's start with the last article I read, about the Department of Homeland Security. In this article you'll read about a document that found its way onto the internet in early July, about how the DHS has, and has had for some time, the authority to take your laptop, ipod, iphone, flash drive, and any other computer hardware you have, whilst entering the country.

And hold said items indefinitely.

It seems that Walmart does not want its workers to unionize.

This might be because they hire workers who are illegal and get paid minimum wage or less, if that's possible.

This ties in to the suicide of Bruce E. Ivins.

I wonder if he did do it.

This story, the one on Ivins, reminds me of Arlington Road. I'm not sure why.

I find it interesting that no proof of Ivins involvement is in the article. Only speculation. It would be very interesting if they close this "Amerithrax" (eyeroll) case, without divulging any evidence that Ivins was, in fact, the perpetrator.

I find it interesting that it took the FBI 7 years to make this connection. It took 6 years to clear Steven Hatfill... it's an election year.

Doesn't add up to me. I'll reserve further judgement when more details are released.

A House panel voted to cite Karl Rove in contempt this week. You know, after he left the country, came back, went to a baseball game...

So far, twice, people have attempted to perform citizens arrests on Rove. Once, at the University of Iowa, he was almost arrested by two students. The second was in Iowa, as well, where Rove was at a fundraiser.

I've heard a couple of things lately. He's senile. He's too old to be President. The RNC is going to nominate someone else instead of McCain, because anyone else will look 100% better.

Frankly, we have a President in office that can't answer a question without having an internal seizure. This, of course, is my all time favorite Bush video.

First, I'd like to present you all with a case that you might not have heard about.

Here's an article on a Mexican man who is set to be killed in Houston on August 5th.

I found out about this topic on reddit. The link takes you to the articles comment page.

Here, you will see one of the reasons why the United States continues to say FU to the UN. Because our citizens and politicians alike are more interested in their personal beliefs rather than the rule of law.

What would happen if you or a member of your family committed a crime outside of the United States, and was told they couldn't contact the US consulate for legal help?

My comments, btw, are the 'stilesjp' comments. After my back and forth with 'locutus', well, I figured he was too stupid, or was baiting me, or has schizophrenia, after his last comment. Such a shame. On such an important topic, to not even be able to debate it as an adult.

The fact is, I'm on the fence about the death penalty, especially when talking about the state of Texas, who has killed more inmates than any other state.

On top of that, Project Innocence has had more sentences overturned in Texas than any other state. Death row sentences, and others.

And the funny thing is, no one who is requesting the review is saying that he's innocent.

Anyone have anything to say on this matter?

In the EYEROLL edition here (brand new, I just thought of that), we have an article from the Washington Post about the Bush Administrations brush off towards Guantanamo detainees, going back as far as 2002.

Isn't it amazing that everyone who actually does some research outside of the American mainstream media already knew (or at least assumed) this was taking place?

Didn't the US bar the Red Cross from having contact with detainees since 2003?

Here's an article written in January of 2007, that has Bush being quoted as saying:

"I'd like to end Guantanamo; I'd like it to be over with," the president said. "One of the things we will do is we'll send people back to their home countries."

I won't even comment on the ineffectualness of the Democrats because, frankly, they're useless.

Here's an article (transcript, kind of long) about detainees in both Iraq and Guantanamo being tortured, who were freed after YEARS of incarceration.

I don't think it's necessary to bring up Abu Ghraib.

Frankly, if people need to read this book to know the US's policy on detainees... they should go and put their heads back in, well... pick your orifice.

I just read this NY Times Op Ed article.

Is it just me, or in this day and age are we so bad at attacking and destroying, we have to HOPE things go well?

There is so much in this article that bothers me. It's as though possible outcomes were written on index cards, stapled to a wall and darts were thrown at them, then jumbled up into this.

I'll break it down for you.

Options:

Israel can wait until they are nuclear ready and see what happens... see if the US diplomat has any luck.

Israel can attack now.

... isn't that it?

"It is in the interest of neither Iran nor the United States (nor, for that matter, the rest of the world) that Iran be savaged by a nuclear strike, or that both Israel and Iran suffer such a fate. Hold on a second.

It is not in Iran's best interests to get bombed by nuclear... bombs?

Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but from my days as a journalist*, you write down things in order of importance.

Fuck the oil. Sorry, but going back to the first sentence, I doubt that the rest of the world gives a shit about whether or not it's in the best interest of THE UNITED STATES if Iran gets nuked or not. I seriously don't think that the people of Europe are saying "God, if they bomb Iran, what's going to happen to the United States?!?"

While I don't know enough about Al Gore's 10 year program, I think it's pretty clear that, regardless of any ADDITIONAL war/conflict/police action in the region, we should be reducing our dependence on foreign oil already.

The oil in the region should be the least of our concerns, where nuclear war is a factor.

The resounding military consequences would be justified. If someone bombed us because we were doing something that someone didn't like, I'm sure we would react, as much in kind as possible, and we would get their families, their friends, their cats and dogs.

I won't even get into the political consequences because, obviously, if it got to that point, all of the politics would have failed, and the people responsible would be denounced (gosh, that's such a bullshit word) all over the world.

A global denouncement. Who gives a shit.

Radioactive pollution. Hmmm... yeah. Is that really a concern? I mean, it's all the way at the bottom there. It's almost like it's a given, you know, cause they used nuclear weapons.

Forget about future generations born with a third eye, or skinless children walking around, breathing through holes in their fingers.

SAVE THE OIL!

So, to sum up (and I'll let you read the article yourself, because my heart stopped for a second, I grabbed a chocolate bar and said "Fuck exercising if these assholes are going to use nukes.")...

Since we gave Israel the AMBER light, we're accessories to yet another destruction. And the world has to sit back and wait while Israel goes and does their business. And we all have to hold our breath and HOPE, for christ sake, that they do it right.

Either that or hope the US diplomat does the right thing.

I'm going to go buy some more candy bars, some milk shakes, ice cream, brownies... you know, just in case.

First off, I'm not sure if you knew this, but since 2005 (I believe), when you typed in 'failure' or 'miserable failure' and clicked "i'm feeling lucky", you would be directed to a page on George W. Bush.

This was explained as a bunch of people getting together and linking 'miserable failure' to this site.

Today, Nancy Pelosi has gone out of her way to call President Bush a failure.

This coming from the woman who, since 2004, has blocked impeachment proceedings against Bush. In 2006 she told Democrats that impeachment was 'off the table'.

Someone on reddit pointed out that this was amazing timing on her part, as Bush was opening our shores to domestic drilling (not sure I'm for this) and sending over a diplomat to Iran. It's an interesting point.

She's the first woman, the first Californian and the first Italian-American (eyeroll) to ever be named Speaker of the House. She's the highest ranking woman in the history of the United States.

Now, maybe it's just me, but isn't this a pot / kettle situation? Has this woman, with the force of a Democratically controlled Congress, done anything right while being in office? Sure, she helped raise minimum wage. Her 100 hours program seemed audacious, but in the end accomplished little. It seems to me that the Democrats are scared of losing control of the House, so they take the safe route to the middle. And this woman has been leading them. She's known as a 'liberal', but most see her much more conservative.

Her words, at her acceptance of House Speaker:

"The election of 2006 was a call to change — not merely to change the control of Congress, but for a new direction for our country. Nowhere were the American people more clear about the need for a new direction than in Iraq. The American people rejected an open-ended obligation to a war without end."

So much has changed...

I won't even get into FISA. It's so not worth it.

I read that article and I just sat down, hard, clicked my teeth, missed my tongue by mere centimeters and thought "Do these people think we're all that stupid? How is it even remotely possible that a woman who was supposed to be a kind of beacon, and who became the opposite, can sit there and call Bush "a total failure"?"

This isn't a circus any more. It's an episode of The Twilight Zone. No. No. It's an episode of The Outer Limits, written by Richard Matheson.

WAIT! He wrote for both, so take your pick.

If you've got half an hour, you know, cause we all sit at retail stores on Fridays and do nothing, or have insomnia, or take speed to make sure that the bugs don't catch us... check out this Wolf Blitzer interview of Pelosi, with a whole bunch of I-Reporters sending in their video questions. I haven't watched it, but it seems to be where the whole 'failure' thing came from. I'll give it a view tomorrow.

So, out of the blue, the United States decides to send a diplomat to Iran, to discuss their nuclear program.

Bloggers and every day people who have been following politics a lot longer than I have are very worried about another 'terrorist strike' inside of the United States, before, during, or after the DNC in August, in Denver.

Now, I'm not up for conspiracy theories and the such. What people believe is what they believe. I, for one, have always had it in the back of my mind that the 9/11 attack was circumspect. But that's just me. There are too many things that make the entire issue gray, on both sides.

But I find this situation interesting. First, Bush goes and gives an 'amber' light to Israel, to start gearing up to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities... and now he's sending a diplomat?

Maybe I read and write too much speculative fiction, but doesn't this whole situation smell like a plan?

I can just see the meeting on this.

"We're going to flip-flop, cause everyone's doing it, and send over a guy who we really don't need in the long run. And while he's over there, he's gonna get 'killed' by rebels, or whatever. This will shut up all the Iran no-war-nay-sayers, and get us McCain in the White House in November."

I'm generalizing, but it's not completely out of the realm of thought, right?

Columbian hostage situation

By now I'm sure that you've heard about the brilliant tactical situation in Columbia that brought home 5 hostages?

Well, now it's being reported that the US government, in conjuncture with Columbian officials, paid the members of FARC millions of dollars to release them.

So, I guess that the Bush Administration has brought us an awful economy, the deaths of thousands of US soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and that we now negotiate with terrorists.

Fantastic.

In lieu of this information, I figure that another anti-Bush demonstration is in order.

That the man is still able to get an audience after all these years, and all of the lies, is completely and totally astounding. It seems that people just cannot learn a lesson in this country.

Completely embarrassing that he was able to pull applause out of this crowd. Only in Virginia. Which happens to be a part of:

I'm gonna start a new column, with some articles on people who are so misinformed, these must be wet dreams for Republicans and right wingers.

Check out this article, and be sure to watch the video. I don't think it's possible for someone to have their head in the sand more than this woman.

And the truth is, I hope that she actually takes the time to find out the truth. Because I think she's a poster child for a very dangerous group of people in this country.

This isn't a 'she has to vote my way' kind of thing. I don't care who she votes for. But be INFORMED, for god sake.

This is a large (and growing) population who believe everything they hear, based on prejudices and lies. All of these people were suckered into voting for Bush, and they're being lied to and spun to believe ridiculous things, and spreading the lies and hatred in their communities.

The frightening thing is that their minds are so closed, that they've convinced themselves they're right.

Go watch the video and then visit the Concerned Women for America website, who have turned a pro-choice situation into Obama being for infanticied.

This situation has to do with Obama's nixing of the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

One of the people who was at a hearing for the House Judiciary Subcommittee on this issue was registered nurse Jill L. Stanek, who was named one of the top 30 pro-life causers in the nation. She's become a celebrity, so it's pretty clear to see an agenda here amongst pro-lifers.

I just read an article on the whole FISA bill and a lawsuit with AT&T, and it prompted me to write to Senator Obama, I figured I'd post it here.

Senator, I just wanted to voice my opinion on the FISA bill.

It being an election year, Bush and the Republicans are using this opportunity to push you and other democrats into a corner, and it's working. There is a kow-towing here that is almost unprecedented. The Democrats, who can be accused of moving more centered, who ended up backing the war... aren't Democrats supposed to be the civil minded politicians? Forget the past. We have to. It's a new election. The end of a terrible era.

The Republicans have spun the FISA bill so that being against it means being for the terrorists, or some such nonsense. Being against it means that you're not concerned with keeping America safe, blah blah. It's very upsetting to me, not to mention any rational person in the US (basically half of us) that politicians feel they can use scare tactics and pressure to pass a bill that is not only setting up America to become a police state, but also denying us civil liberties that are locked into the Constitution.

You know, we've come to a peak where the average citizen has had enough. Not a breaking point, but a peak, where this years election is going to bring out a huge population of voters who are sick of the Bush regime. The problem is, having a stance of 'better than Bush/McCain' is not sufficient to bolster confidence in our next president, nor next years daunting task of fixing the economy. Frankly, it'll be you. Unless you or your wife ends up saying something monumentally stupid, you pretty much have this election sewn up. But right now you stand for compromise.

Do we compromise civil liberties now? Do we compromise the privacy of US citizens to get votes? Is that the kind of America we are now? Wouldn't it be better to come out against the FISA bill, regardless of your 'ties' to AT&T, and show a strong front for Democracy? Isn't this kind of compromise just perpetuating an America run by corporations and fueled by the greed of President Bush?

When it comes to the lives of the 300 million people who live here, doesn't it seem fair to say that with each compromise, the face of America is changing for the worse? The world has lost so much respect for us. We've just had 8 years of compromise and scare tactics. 8 years of the worst President on record. 8 years of being forced to take it from someone who doesn't care one iota about American citizens.

The Constitution is important. The ideas, the beliefs, the words that were said to us all by politicians we voted into office, they are important. I won't give examples, but this year has been a nightmare for voters who put some Democrats into office.

We're all hoping that in five months, the person who gets voted into office is going to follow the Constitution. He's going to listen to the people. He's going to continue to have new, wonderful, positive ideas. And he's going to cherish the beliefs that make this a great nation.

You know McCain isn't going to provide that. You know we've been without that kind of honor for a while now. You know how important it all is.

Compromise has its place. It does. But not when you compromise on something illegal.

Well, first we have Obama saying he won't back a filibuster of the new FISA bill, when he said he would.

Word is coming out that Blue State Digital, a company directly responsible for helping Obama raise funds, has ties with AT&T, one of the companies that the FISA bill would protect.

And now we have Senator Russ Feingold discussing the searching of laptops of Americans who are coming back from overseas.

What exactly is happening in this country?

Seems to me that politicians we're supposed to be trusting are compromising our civil liberties. Democrats are being forced to pass bills because it's an election year. Bush is using his last few months to leverage his all encompassing plan to send America into the shitter, his final Presidential legacy plans.

Obama is in a tough situation. Does he kow-tow until he's President? Or does he take a stand and then get the shit kicked out of him by Republicans who say he's soft on terror and the security of the nation? If he does the latter, he's got to sit there and take it as the citizens of this country get screwed over by a ~~dictator~~ president.

Disgusting.

Two articles today about oil and what Congress can do about it.

An article on The Wall Street Journal talks about 4 energy analysts who presented their case to Congress. They go on to talk about the speculation market and how it's inflated the price of oil.

This ties in to an article dealing with the Enron loophole that created the speculation market problem, supposedly.

What makes me laugh about the whole thing is the line where the Republican Senator of Texas who pushed the Enron bill through is now an economic advisor to McCain.

Unreal.

Obama is out to close the loophole. In this US News.com article, he places the blame squarely on Republican Texas Senator Phil Gramm.

Have to wait and see what Congress decides to do about this, but it's pretty clear that if this action, of closing this provision in the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, decreases oil prices in the US, whatever candidate pushes for it will garner a large support base.

Having an aide who is responsible sounds like a big problem.

John McCain and Michelle Obama... oh boy

You know, it's bizarre how, in the internet age, a ridiculous company like FOX would go out of their way to edit something like this from all transcripts. I've seen this a few times on a few different sites, this isn't a hoax.

My dad was a Vietnam vet. He did two tours. And he was not proud of America for doing what they were doing. First, he goes over there and it's hell, you know. Not Hanoi Hilton hell, but hell none-the-less.

Then he comes home to anti-war protesters... I remember I took some pictures of the Vietnam memorial and gave them to my dad. I was, christ, in 5th grade, I think? He looked at them and said "You can keep these, I don't want them."

So, while I understand what McCain is saying... as a presidential candidate, I don't think it's possible to say something dumber, unless you say "I really respect George W. Bush."

McCain hasn't said that, has he? Christ, I'm sure it's out there somewhere...

But the biggest problem here is the Michelle Obama connection.

This is an awful video, the sound synch is way off, but Michelle Obama has been attacked repeatedly in the press, especially by right news networks like FOX, about her statement of being proud of America for the first time in her adult life.

With this, I'm sure you can see why FOX has gone out of their way to edit their transcripts.

These things seem to get the hackles up on people who don't go and do some research, or take into consideration the context. And they vote with their insignificant amount of knowledge, because it's better to hear about politics from 3rd or 4th hand mouths than from trusted sources.

Any anti-war protester over the last five years is not 'proud' of America. They're ashamed. Does that mean they hate America?

This isn't an issue, in my opinion. But you'll be hearing a lot about this FOX editing in the weeks to come, if they don't lay off the Michelle Obama attack, and frankly I think that the McCain line is worse.

In conjuncture with my previous post about McCain's new car battery contest, this post deals with a possible choice of a new fuel source.

This article reports on the stance on ethanol by the two candidates. The article also details some ethanol pros and cons.

Here is an article by The NY Times on Obama's ties to the ethanol industry.

Just by reading this Times article, it's easy to come to the conclusion that setting up ethanol as the new fuel source is setting up a new industry to buy political candidates and influence. In realistic terms, this is a practice that isn't going to go away. You can't run for president, for congress, or as a senator or any other public office without money. Campaigning costs money.

Setting up a new business like ethanol is going to upset a lot of other businesses.

Ok, ok, mainly one.

Speculators would say that either the car companies will drag their feet creating a new kind of engine (and then selling the cars that would run on ethanol) OR car companies would break away from oil companies and embrace the new power player.

The Daily Green article mentions something interesting. Even though ethanol costs more to produce than gas, and will eat up our crops and all that, it also might be a necessary step to move in the right direction. Leapfrogging technology happens all the time. Albeit with things that are substantially less costly than cars.

Imagine, on a smaller scale, software that gets advanced, generation after generation. It moves platforms, it fixes bugs... the auto industry has been under little burden to improve their engines. The laws imposed on the industry for cars to run more efficiently are a joke.

With advances in fuel economy, options, and emissions, who knows what might happen. But one thing is certain.

See, what Obama says he wants a new fuel source, to take the money we're spending out of the middle east. He's going to get a lot of support for that from voters.

The problem is, the corn industry in the US can't possibly supply us with the demand we'll need. We can't sustain that type of output, it just won't be possible. We can't get both crops and a fuel source out of our farm land without terrorizing the environment. And I don't think that's a compromise the Americans are willing to make. That means we'll have to go to countries like Brazil or China for ethanol, both of which have been using it as a fuel source, successfully.

I'm in no way shape or form throwing support to ethanol. From what I've read, it's not the best way for us to move forward, but it would be a move forward, slowly releasing us from the grip of oil. Creating new engines to run on other forms of fuel will only lead to the evolution of engines.

But if half of the bullet points The Daily Green has listed are true... sheesh. That's like taking a gun away from someone and giving them a another gun.

I need more information. But the signs of political pitfalls are there. Perhaps setting up a new industry, to take away from one that's been raping the citizens of all countries, on top of the planet, won't be such a bad thing.

Of course, they can do the same thing, if not properly regulated.

Boy, we're just doomed to repeat ourselves, aren't we...

McCain tries for a Hail Mary

Republican nominee McCain has decided that the best way to capture the imaginations and hearts of voters who want a president to end the energy crisis we're going through is to bullshit them with a new contest.

He's proposing an offer of $300 million dollars to the company that comes up with a better car battery, one that will outperform hybrids and reduce the need for oil.

Now, there are also two conflicting reports. Yahoo (linked above) states that:

In addition, a so-called Clean Car Challenge would provide U.S. automakers with a $5,000 tax credit for every zero-carbon emissions car they develop and sell.

CNN states:

The challenge would allow $5,000 tax credits to buyers of such cars, making such vehicles more appealing to consumers and thus easier to sell.

Whom to believe? Yahoo's AP report seems more along the lines of Big Business bought politicians. CNN's report seems to be the kind of fantasy line that presidential hopefuls say to get votes, and then don't follow through.

Nowhere in there does it answer any real questions about such a contest. Who would judge it? When would it take affect? How long is the contest going to run?

Who in their right mind is going to think that Big Oil is going to allow something like this to even remotely happen without a fight?

Why would we give up tax dollars to a person who would receive an unbelievable amount of money for the patents alone? As an incentive? I think that independent engineers have plenty of incentive in this economic atmosphere, and anyone capable of actually creating a new kind of battery, engine or fuel source that will be more efficient and economically progressive will do so, not because of a contest, but because in a capitalistic country, they're going to clean up.

McCain's support is floundering, and so he comes up with a marketing technique type of announcement to get him some air time and some sound bites. Well, it's working. Now we just have to see if American's are going to fall for it.

There's a fight for a senate seat in Maine happening now. I found a great article on Political Critic about the current atmosphere of the nation and how even bipartisan Republicans like Susan Collins might be forced out because of the bad Republican name.

Wikipedia has an ok page on Senator Collins and her opponent Tom Allen.

This is a comment I left on the Political Critic page.

I don't know much about the Senator from Maine, but your assessment seems astute. With blind loyalty to parties (especially during the Bush Administration), it's understandable how easy a Dem like Allen can come in and shake things up thus, but his video is an ABC book of touching points, as if written by a 5th grader.

"I will get us a soda machine. Nancy says soda is bad for your teeth. What they hell does she know!"

I can't say whether or not he would be a good Senator, but for god sake, the "I this" and the "she that" campaign is so nah-nah-like in its childishness... can't we get past that? Or is it the only thing that works any more?

Perhaps these sound bites worked in the past, but I have a feeling the country is done with that, and the people are doing their best to find the leaders they want. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking. - J

Is it just me or does a video made by a committee of Republicans just not pack as much of a punch as, say a video made by an opponent? I watched the video, I saw the comments, especially the one about the trip to Miami paid for by a pharmaceutical company (I liked how the slipped that in after Michael Moore's Sicko film)... and I don't think people are going to care. All of congress is bought and paid for by either a pharmaceutical or insurance or oil or car company. That's no surprise to anyone.

To quote the film Casino: "I had dozens of politicians and state officials coming through that place every week. Why not make him happy? For politicians like our State Senator up there, everything was on the house. These guys won their comp life
when they got elected... so, hey, why not take advantage of it."

We'll see how things turn out, but I figure that every state and every district has got its reps either waiting on the defensive or ready for a few quick anti-Rep sound bites. One way or the other, I think the next four years are there for the Democrats to either do it right or screw up completely. I don't see much middle ground.

Here's an article on the latest telecommunication immunization bullshit that the Bush Administration is trying to pass, and it seems that Obama is getting caught up in it.

Here's the problem. The Bush Administration decided to tap the telecommunication industry to illegally wiretap and basically fuck us all in the ass over the 4th amendment.

Then, to cover their own asses, they came up with a bill that protected all the companies that did the said fucking.

The problem is, and if you read the comments at the article, people are pissed off, and saying they aren't going to support Obama...

It's almost as if someone said "Obama has had intimate relations with his mother." At least, that's how they're reacting.

People, it's an election year. He's already against the war. He's for a better economy. He's for getting big oil to stop what they're doing. It would be very easy for anyone to spin that anyone against this bill is not for the protection of the United States.

Why isn't that clear to see? Sure, the bill is bullshit. Anyone with a pair of half glazed eyes can see that, and it's another step for the Bush Admin to distance themselves and the people who paid for their campaigns from prosecution in the future.

It's amazing how black and white people get during an election year. You KNOW McCain isn't going to go against this law. You know he's not going to go against the Bush Administration. So wake up!

More and more this blog (and it's so goddamn early to just say "Here's my choice") is going pro-Obama. And I don't want to just blindly follow someone. I want to be objective and realistic.

Although objectively and realistically, McCain is a nightmare.

But anyone who doesn't see that the fix is in, for a good reason, is blind to the black / white view that has damaged us these 8 years. And if you think this is the worst the Bush Administration has handed down, you should really look at the post I left earlier today.

Some things HAVE to happen. It's quite easy to understand. This is an imperfect world. There is no wand, there is no easy fix, there is no bright light at the end of the tunnel. The light is dull or semi-bright, depending on your perception, and the only thing we can do is fight, equally, together, to brighten it.

You don't like what Obama has to say? Write a letter. You hate this bill? Write a letter. Call you congressman. Look to the left, the numbers, the emails are all right there.

If you read my post on oil in America, and you check out the comments, a buddy of mine, crotchety old man reminded me of the light bulb joke that is about to be forced on Americans.

I saw this video posted on youtube from a reddit post, about three weeks ago, about a new kind of light bulb Americans are going to be forced to use come 200somethingsomething. (edit: Here's the original article I saw.)

It's funny how these things are just passed, without people knowing it. Without any notification, any serious news coverage... and it seems to me that something like this, while seemingly unimportant, can have a trickle effect for the future that is hard to interpret now.

But I think it's very clear that someone is going to be making a ton of money on this deal.

I found this off of Professor Smartass's blog. While that might not be a name you trust right off the bat (first impressions and all), you should check the site and the article out.

While I'd like to keep this a political blog, since oil is such a big issue, I'd like to point you all to an interesting article on the Committee on Natural Resources website.

To summarize the article. Big Oil companies are sitting on 68 million acres of land and not drilling, fucking over the American consumer for their own profits.

The Resources committee is a congressional committee of the House of Representatives. It's chairman is Nick J. Rahall, a Democratic Representative from West Virginia.

I write that because it's easy for certain 'committees' to just say "Hey! We're gonna try and pass a bill." This is actually a committee that can get it into the right hands and get it done.

That's not to say that the Administration we are currently under won't try and block it. It's pretty clear that this Administration was bought and paid for by oil lobbyists.

But, they can try and we can help.

I HIGHLY suggest that you contact your Representatives, Senators, Governors and witch doctors about The Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act of 2008 (H.R. 6251).

If you don't already have a personal witch doctor, do it yourself.

For anyone who hasn't seen All the President's Men... or any film for that matter where political figures and big business are seen shredding documents, well, that's a thing of the past.

Now we have the White House disposing of millions of emails which were sent during the period leading up to the Iraq war.

Here is the response from CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) who was suing the White House Office of Administration for the missing emails. This is a fascinating read.

Clearly we don't need all of the puzzle pieces in this situation. And I'm not getting all conspiracy theory on anyone. It's impossible, in this day and age, for there not to be back up servers in one of the most secure and technologically up-to-date offices in the whole country.

And this 'mistake' coupled with the timing could not be construed as coincidence.

This is a great example of the spin, and the pressure exerted on D.C. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly.

My favorite part in the CREW article is:

After initially agreeing to provide records, OA changed course and claimed it was not an agency and, therefore, had no obligation to comply with the FOIA. OA made this claim despite the fact that even the White House’s own website described OA as an agency and included regulations for processing FOIA requests.

Here's the article.

The title is McCain seen as best choice for economy. The article is written by Jennifer Ablan.

I remember reading this article, it was re-printed on Yahoo, and thinking that it could basically be summed up in one word: bullshit.

First off, the American people are split up into a number of different groups, when it comes to demographics. Race, sex, financial disposition, location, family status, etc. But there are only three different groups when it comes to the economy of the country. The rich, the middle class, and the poor.

Yes, there are those people that can just reach the middle class from poor... and a handful of people who can grab hold of the rich title from middle class. But grey areas aren't relevant here, unless you're at the cusp. And cusps always hurt, in any generation, from any administration.

In the first two paragraphs... I mean, I can't even believe what I'm reading. First, Wall Street experts are saying that McCain would be best for the country's economy. Then... next paragraph... Wall Street is backing Obama. With cash.

Cue Jon Stewart spit-take.

One of McCain's plans is the eliminate the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) plan. Initially set up to have higher income households that had been receiving benefits so they didn't have to pay taxes (or very little) actually start paying taxes. The plan has morphed into something that still taxes households who live in certain high-tax areas and make over $100,000 a year. Seems to be there are some drawbacks as it continues to evolve. But only for people whose household incomes are over a certain amount.

So, one of the things he'd like to do is relieve higher income households the burden of paying these taxes.

I can understand why Wall Street Experts would be in favor of such an idea.

McCain also wants to slash corporate taxes. I would find it impossible to believe that said corporations would pass this savings on to their customers. That is an assumption, but a pretty reliable one.

James Caron of Morgan Stanley goes on to say "In this environment that we're in right now, the last thing you want to have is higher taxes and taking money out of the consumers' pockets."

I see.

This is one of those soundbite sentences that people around the country read and go "Who wants to take more money out of my pocket for more taxes?!?" They don't put it in context. They don't look at the man and see if he's got an agenda.

Take a look at this Money.com article on the breakdown of which consumers will actually be having money taken out of their pockets.

David Bianco, chief U.S. strategist at UBS Investment Research. "Wall Street would welcome McCain with open arms."

Of course they would.

"The market will respond to McCain corporate tax cuts," said participant Alan Ruskin, chief international strategist at RBS Greenwich Capital in Greenwich, Connecticut.

No shit. Less taxes for corporations means bigger profits.

McCain's tax ideas are skewed, as was Bush's, to help the rich. Plain and simple.

We get these three guys to give us their expert opinion, and then we find out that investment industry has given more money to Obama than any other candidate.

So, already the validity of the title of the article is bunk. It's very easy to get three different people who make over $100,000 a year to say "I like McCain's tax solutions better than Obama's".

Wall Street 'experts' are a dime a dozen, and frankly, the country is not in the hands of these people. They make up a small portion of the investment industry and seem to only give a shit about themselves and their fellow financial peers. I have news for these experts. All the profits that those companies that McCain is worried about helping? They all make their money from the 90% of the country that doesn't make $100,000 a year or more. It's sheer numbers. There are more of us.

And as I stated, there is no way these companies will pass along their savings to consumers.

Henry Kaufman sheds some much needed light on the entire scenario. It's too soon to tell who's going to be best for the American economy. And it's true. But time is wasting. You can see the two major candidates buying their time and waiting for the moments when they can say the major lines about the issues Americans think are important. They're waiting for THE opportune moment to grab people's attentions.

But if McCain sticks to his guns, it'll be pretty clear who's got the better policy.

Perhaps I'm over simplifying. I'm sure there are more in depth articles out there on the policies of these two candidates, and as time goes on we'll see more specifics on their plans. But there are certain things in these articles that are pretty clear.

I'm really looking forward to see who runs as an independent, and what their financial policy dictates.

This is a strange thing for me to do. I'm really a nobody.

Let me re-phrase that. You don't know me. Political analysts the world over don't know me. Candidates, Senators, Governors, pretty much everyone holding an office doesn't know me.

Perhaps they read one of my letters I sent to them, about this or that. I'm not sure.

I see all of those letters being treated like screenplays in Hollywood. They're all being read by readers. The stupid ones get thrown out. The ones with actual grammar, structure and story get put in with the pile marked 'readable'.

The ones with an anti-message get passed around the office. The ones with something to say... depends on the day of the reader.

There are a lot of problems in the US, and the economy is one of them. I know, I know, bear with me.

See, every morning I travel to work, being driven by my mom or my sister. We own a family business. We all work very hard. And this economy is killing our company. So, every day we drive, we talk about what-not. And one day, some political discussion came up with my mom and as I listened to her (and I love my mom), I noticed how out of touch she was with what was happening, politically. Same with my sister. And yes, I love her, too.

There's a difference between reading a CNN article, and understanding the force behind a CNN article. The same can be said for The New York Times, The Washington Post, US News and World Report, Time Magazine, The LA Times, and any other newspaper, magazine, broadcast service and internet website that has an opinion and a favorite.

Then there is the force behind the news. And this comes in many different forms. But they all use one tool.

For the cynical and realistic, they recognize this tool as the spin. The code in which most political (and business) spirits thrive on. The spin can shift blame, put others in a better light, damage the most credible of people by taking their words and changing the context... it's a frightening power. And it's very effective. The Bush Administration has been the KING of the spin. The machine in place worked on the country for 7 years, relentlessly.

It's power is waning, and most intelligent people are either just waking up and seeing the destruction it's caused, or have known about it, and dealt with it accordingly.

The truth seeps. It is fluid like, and every once in a while you'll catch a glimpse of it. Now, there is truth and there is TRUTH. We see the former all the time. And it's full of facts. But, as I said, the majority of the time, there is an opinion or favorite behind the words. And it's bent.

The TRUTH. Hard to come by. But there are fighters. All over, there are fighters. There are journalists with integrity. There are politicians who can't go a day without wanting to vomit. There are everyday people who won't look the other way, no matter how gruesome or frightening or detrimental to their personal safety.

I don't know enough about these people. It's one of the other reasons I started this.

I'll be posting news stories. Videos. Bone prophecies collected from witch's and shamans. And I'm going to try and dissect them. I expect to be wrong sometimes. I welcome comments from everyone.

You'll see my header. That question mark, at this point, could be anything (although it was originally supposed to be a whipped cream pie... made one, shot photos of it... blech, came out awful, tasted worse.) And that could either be us, or U.S. Take your pick.
